The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most iconic coins in American history. Its design and quality put it on par with the $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle as one of the most sought-after coins of American mintage. Today, you can purchase a Morgan Silver Dollar from Silver.com with an MS65 grade from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. The year of the coin you receive will be picked by our staff after your order is placed and cannot be guaranteed prior to ordering. Morgan Silver Dollar Coins marked the return of silver dollars to American currency mintage. The Seated Liberty Dollar preceded the Morgan Silver Dollar, but production was halted following passage of the Coinage Act of 1873. George T. Morgan, a British engraver hired by the US Mint after he couldn’t find employment in Britain’s Royal Mint, designed the images used on both sides of the coin.
The Morgan Silver Dollar was struck between 1878 and 1904, with a brief return in 1921. Finding these coins in good condition is difficult given their age and circulation history. Each of the Morgan Silver Dollars available here today has an MS65 grade from the NGC. A Mint State 65 grade identifies a coin with an attractive, high quality luster and strike for the date and mint. The coin’s surface may have a few scattered contact marks, or even two large marks. It is also possible that one or two hairlines are visible and light scuff marks are present.
On the reverse side of the Morgan Silver Dollar is the image of a bald eagle with its wings outstretched. The eagle clutches arrows and an olive branch in its talons. On the obverse, Morgan’s depiction of Lady Liberty’s head is featured in a left-profile format. Morgan Silver Dollar coins were struck during their production run at the Denver Mint, San Francisco Mint, Carson City Mint, and New Orleans Mint. The latter two are no longer active production facilities in the US Mint system.
The United States Mint operates a total of four state-of-the-art mints in the 21st century. In addition to San Francisco and Denver, the mint has facilities at Philadelphia and West Point. Founded in 1792, the US Mint is one of the oldest facilities in the Western Hemisphere.
