The Peace Silver Dollar enjoyed one of the briefest, but most eventful mintage periods in the history of currency. It was produced by the United States Mint from 1921 to 1928 with two more years of production in 1934 and 1935. Because the Peace Silver Dollar was the last US dollar coin to be minted before the cessation of silver coinage in 1965, it was literally the last genuine “silver dollar” ever created. Consequently, it remains a popular favorite among collectors.
Each peace dollar coin was composed from .77344 troy oz. of 90% silver. The peace silver dollars featured in this collection are in AU (Almost Uncirculated) condition. The term AU means that although the coins have never been in circulation, they still possess light marks or scratches due to friction against one another during storage.
The artwork featured on the Peace Silver Dollar was the result of a contest that would determine the dollar coin’s new design. Displayed on the front of the coin is a rendition of Lady Liberty that bears a close resemblance to the actual Statue itself. In this image, Liberty is portrayed wearing her iconic “radiate” or pointed crown with a gentle breeze blowing through her soft tendrils. Her name hovers above her head, while the coin’s mintage year sits beneath her. The final inscription of “In God We Trust” appears behind her in the background.
Equally as patriotic is the bald eagle on the reverse side of the coin. It sits vigilantly perched upon a rock with an olive branch clasped in its talons. Emanating behind the eagle are rays of sunlight, which mimic the same pointed pattern of Liberty’s radiate crown. Viewers can also observe the coin’s denomination in the backdrop of the image. Lastly, an inscription bearing our nation’s name and the words “E Pluribus Unum” serves as an arched heading above the eagle.
