The first Gold $20 Double Eagle ever issued by the United States Mint was struck using gold from the California Gold Rush in 1849. These initial strikes were proof specimens used to establish the series and the production process for the coins. From 1850 to 1907, the original Lady Liberty design was struck on the coins.
Starting in late 1907, perhaps the most iconic American coin design of all time debuted on the Gold $20 Double Eagle. This vision of Lady Liberty in front-facing relief was groundbreaking for its time and created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Saint-Gaudens had created the image at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt.
The obverse field of the coins in the Pre-33 Gold $20 Liberty and Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle 2-Coin Set comes with differing images of Liberty. On the Liberty Head coin is a depiction of Liberty in left-profile relief wearing a coronet crown. The Saint-Gaudens design shows Liberty in front-facing relief with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left.
On the reverse of the Pre-33 Gold $20 Liberty and Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles in this set, you will find the American bald eagle. The Liberty coin depicts one of the most ornate versions of the heraldic eagle in US history. On the reverse of the Saint-Gaudens coin is the image of the bald eagle soaring over the rising sun.
These Pre-33 Gold $20 Liberty and Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle 2-Coin Sets come with individual plastic flips. The coins are both in About Uncirculated+ condition. This term applies to coins with light or trace wear on only the highest relief points, with medium to near-full mint luster present. The Liberty coin has possible dates of 1849 to 1907, while the Saint-Gaudens coin has dates of 1907 to 1933.
