The largest denomination of gold the US Mint ever issued into circulation on coins was the Gold $20 Double Eagle. The coin was part of the US Eagle denomination based on the $10 denomination. Double Eagles were introduced in 1849 with proofs to establish the concept, and were struck regularly from 1850 to 1933. Only two designs ever featured in this denomination and you can own them both in one set. The Liberty Head design was created by James B. Longacre and featured on the Gold Double Eagle from 1849 when the initial proofs were struck until 1907 when the program began its transition to the new design. In 1905, Augustus Saint-Gaudens began working on a new design for the coins at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1907, Saint-Gaudens’ new Liberty design debuted on the coins and was struck by the US Mint through 1933.
The obverse of the coins in the Pre-33 Gold $20 Liberty and Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Set features one of two effigies of Liberty. The Liberty Head shows Lady Liberty’s head in left-profile relief wearing a coronet crown. The Saint-Gaudens design shows a full-length figure of Liberty walking toward the viewer with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other.
On the reverse of coins in these Pre-33 Gold $20 Liberty and Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle 2-Coin Sets are images of the American bald eagle. The Longacre design on the Liberty Head coin depicts the heraldic eagle, while the Saint-Gaudens design features a bald eagle as it glides over the rising sun. Liberty Head coins dated 1866 and later have the national motto, while coins dated 1876 and later spell out the full denomination as TWENTY DOLLARS instead of TWENTY D.
