The gold coins of the US Eagle Series in the 19th and early 20th centuries saw the nation go through many major changes and events. From the discovery of gold deposits on both the East and West Coast of North America to the US Civil War and the Industrial Revolution, the Gold $5 Liberty Half Eagle was in circulation and production at the US Mint. Today, Pre-33 Gold $5 Liberty Half Eagle Four-Coin Sets are available to you online at Silver.com.

Coin Set Highlights:

  • Available to ship to you in protective plastic flips!
  • This Pre-1900 set offers only Gold Half Eagles issued from 1838 to 1899!
  • Consists of .242 Troy ounces of actual gold content per coin.
  • The individual face values of $5 (USD) are fully backed by the US government.
  • On the obverse is the Liberty Head design.
  • The reverse features the heraldic eagle of the United States.
  • Coins are available in XF+ condition.
  • Please keep in mind you will get four different date marks on the coins you receive.

The Liberty Head design on the Gold $5 Half Eagle coin debuted in 1838 after a short-lived previous Liberty design known as the Classic Head. Both the eagle on the reverse and the portrait of Liberty on the reverse were redesigned for the shift to the Liberty Head Series. William Kneass, the 2nd Chief Engraver of the United States, had created the Classic Head image in 1834. In 1838, 3rd Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht redesigned the coins with the Liberty Head image.

Liberty Head Half Eagle coins remain the only denomination from the series to have been struck at all seven branch mints of the US Mint during its history: Philadelphia, Dahlonega, Charlotte, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City, and Denver.

On the obverse side of Pre-33 Gold $5 Liberty Half Eagles is a portrait of Liberty. This left-profile portrait captures Liberty with her hair in a bun, a coronet at the top of her head, and long curls down her neck. There are 13 stars around her bust and a date mark beneath.

The reverse field of the Pre-33 Gold $5 Liberty Half Eagle Coins in this four-coin set includes the heraldic eagle of the United States. The design was altered slightly in 1866 to include a banner with “In God We Trust” inscribed. All coins issued 1838 to 1865 lack this banner, while all coins dated 1866 to 1899 have the banner.

This Pre-33 Gold $5 Liberty Half Eagle Four-Coin Set comes with coins dated before 1900. You will receive four coins individually housed in plastic flips. You will receive four different date marks with your purchase and find no matching dates in your set. All coins are in Extremely Fine condition and have only light wear on the highest points with some traces of the mint luster.

Where does your spot price come from?

We use a live, up-to-the-second spot price feed supplied by Xignite.com, a worldwide leader in the data supply market.

Are your products actually in stock?

Yes. We are one of the few bullion dealers in the industry who only deems products "in stock" when we have them on-hand and ready to ship immediately. In the instance of a presale item, we denote that the product is on presale and the estimated shipping date. While we make the best efforts to hit presale dates, the dates are only estimates, given we cannot control mint production issues and/or carrier dealyes.

Why are multiple prices listed?

We offer a 4% discount to "cash" paying customers - with paper check, bank wire, and bitcoin payments being defined as cash. On many products, we are also able to offer volume discounts to customers purchasing large quantities of the same item. All volume pricing is laid out in the chart on the product's description page, as well as in the cart.

When do I lock in my price?

All prices are locked in at the time of purchase. Credit/debit card, PayPal, BitCoin, Ethereum, and Ripple orders are paid at the time of checkout, while paper check and bank wire orders require a credit/debit card on file to lock in your pricing while we await your payment. Please note, paper check and bank wire orders will NOT result in a charge to your card - we simple maintain the card on file while we await full payment by your selected payment method.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently only ship to addresses in the United States, including APOs.
