The Liberty Head design, or Coronet Head, was created for the Gold US Eagle Series in 1838 by Christian Gobrecht. Mr. Gobrecht was the 3rd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint and redesigned the Liberty effigy of the leading gold coins of the United States just years after his predecessor had unveiled it.
Certain denominations of the Gold US Eagle had received a redesign in 1834 with an older depiction of Lady Liberty known as the Classic Head. Liberty had long, flowing curls in the Classic Head design with similar facial features and a coronet that sat more horizontally across her head. This design was created by William Kneass, the 2nd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint and was only used from 1834 to early 1838.
The obverse of these Pre-33 Gold $5 Liberty Half Eagles features the Liberty Head design from Gobrecht. The left-profile effigy shows much of Liberty’s hair up in a bun at the back of her head with just a few strands of curls running down her neck. The coronet in her hair is set more at a 45-degree angle in this design. There are 13 stars on this face and a date mark.
On the reverse of Pre-33 Gold Liberty Half Eagles is the heraldic eagle. The bald eagle supports the US national shield as it clutches the olive branch of peace and the arrows of war. Coins dated 1838 to 1865 lack a national motto, while coins dated 1866 and later have the national motto on a ribbon banner above the eagle.
These Pre-33 Gold $5 Liberty Half Eagles are available in XF+ condition. Extremely Fine coins have only light wear on the high points of the coin with traces of the mint luster still visible.
