Certified Silver Armenian Noah’s Ark Coins
Silver Armenian Noah’s Ark Coins are available in MS70 and MS69 condition from the NGC and PCGS. The Silver Armenian Noah’s Ark coins were first minted in 2011, and have been minted each year since. Issued by the Central Bank of Armenia, Leipziger Edelmetallverarbeitung produces the silver found in these coins, which are then minted and distributed by the Geiger Edelmetalle Mint located in Germany.
The Noah’s Ark Silver Coin is Armenia’s first piece of investment bullion, though the country had previously released special edition circulated coins. Intended to compete with other iconic coins (like the American Silver Eagle), the Noah’s Ark Silver Coin is an investment collectible, though it also has value as legal tender in Armenia.
The Noah’s Ark series is inspired by the iconic Christian Old Testament story of Noah’s Ark. This story has special significance for Armenia, because until the early 20th century, part of Mount Ararat (Noah’s eventual landing place) sat within Armenia’s borders. Though the mountain range now exists within Turkish borders, Mount Ararat is still an important Armenian national symbol. These unique coins celebrate that biblical symbol and its historic religious significance.
These certified Armenian coins are produced with 99.9% pure silver. They are currently available in seven sizes: 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 5 oz, 10 oz, 1 kg, and 5 kg. Originally, the 2011 mint of this coin only provided three sizes: 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz. The coin’s popularity, however, inspired the Central Bank of Armenia to add the four larger sizes to the lineup in 2012, and all seven sizes have been minted each year since.
Armenian Noah’s Ark Coin Design
Artist Eduard Kurghinyan designed both the obverse and the reverse of the coin. The obverse depicts Armenia’s national coat of arms, which features an eagle and a lion arrayed behind a shield. The shield is divided into four segments, each with a different image within, all of which feature a lion or an eagle. In the very center of the shield is an image of Mount Ararat.
As with other silver bullion coins, the silver’s fineness, weight, and mint year are on the front of the coin. The coins also depict the phrase “Republic of Armenia” in both Armenian and English, and display the currency value in Dram, the Armenian currency.
The reverse of the coin depicts an image of Noah’s Ark afloat upon the great flood, with Mount Ararat in the distance and the sun rising over its peaks. The foreground shows an image of a dove carrying an olive branch. The image centers around the end of the flood and Noah’s landing on Mount Ararat, bringing with it a sense of hope. Around the edge of the coin are the words “Noah’s Ark” in English and in Armenian. Both the obverse and reverse of this coin stay consistent with each year.
Certified Silver Armenian Coin Information
Obtaining an official grade from an accepted organization is key when investing in and collecting silver bullion. Currently, two coin grading companies are most widely accepted as the grading standard: the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and the Professional Coin Grading Service (PGCS.) These two companies offer clear standards by which to grade coins, upon which reputable coin dealers around the world rely.
The highest coin grade achievable is Mint State, meaning the coin has not been circulated and is in the same condition now as it was when it was produced at the mint (aka “mint condition.”) The PCGS describes these coins “as struck.” Mint State coins achieve a grade of anywhere from MS60 to MS70. The NGC magnifies coins five times to determine whether any imperfections exist on the coin. Only without imperfections can a coin gain the grade of Mint State 70. Uncirculated coins that fall below 70 may lack a full strike and will have hairline marks, though these coins still look very appealing to the naked eye.
