The S.S. Tilawa’s sinking in November 1942 is one of the more overlooked but significant maritime tragedies of World War II in the Indian Ocean. A Japanese submarine torpedoed the British India Steam Navigation Company vessel while it was on its way from Bombay to Mombasa and Durban. In addition to the loss of 280 lives, the ship was carrying 2,364 silver bullion bars. These bars were recovered from the ocean floor in 2017, and now you have the opportunity to own a piece of history raised from 2,800 meters below the waves. The S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Faceplates are available right now at Silver.com.

Product Highlights:

  • Delivered in a protective box!
  • Silver recovered from the ocean floor after 70 years of being submerged!
  • Each faceplate is cut from an original silver bar from the wreck!
  • Contains about 100 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.

Each S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Faceplate weighs approximately 100 Troy ounces and offers a rare link to a significant event in maritime history. These faceplates are cut from larger 1,000 Troy ounce silver bars that were part of the cargo of the S.S. Tilawa. They come securely packed in protective boxes for safe delivery.

The S.S. Tilawa sank while carrying a shipment of silver bullion bars destined for refinement into coinage for South Africa. After the ship went down, these silver bars were lost on the bottom of the Indian Ocean, at a depth of about 2,800 meters, where they remained for over 70 years. In 2017, Argentum Exploration Ltd. recovered the bars from the wreck.

These faceplates are not only a piece of silver but a tangible connection to the history of the S.S. Tilawa. The silver in each faceplate was originally refined during World War II and spent decades on the ocean floor. After the recovery, the bars were used to cut these 100 Troy ounce faceplates, offering a piece of that unforgettable maritime story.

Where does your spot price come from?

We use a live, up-to-the-second spot price feed supplied by Xignite.com, a worldwide leader in the data supply market.

Are your products actually in stock?

Yes. We are one of the few bullion dealers in the industry who only deems products "in stock" when we have them on-hand and ready to ship immediately. In the instance of a presale item, we denote that the product is on presale and the estimated shipping date. While we make the best efforts to hit presale dates, the dates are only estimates, given we cannot control mint production issues and/or carrier dealyes.

Why are multiple prices listed?

We offer a 4% discount to "cash" paying customers - with paper check, bank wire, and bitcoin payments being defined as cash. On many products, we are also able to offer volume discounts to customers purchasing large quantities of the same item. All volume pricing is laid out in the chart on the product's description page, as well as in the cart.

When do I lock in my price?

All prices are locked in at the time of purchase. Credit/debit card, PayPal, BitCoin, Ethereum, and Ripple orders are paid at the time of checkout, while paper check and bank wire orders require a credit/debit card on file to lock in your pricing while we await your payment. Please note, paper check and bank wire orders will NOT result in a charge to your card - we simple maintain the card on file while we await full payment by your selected payment method.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently only ship to addresses in the United States, including APOs.
