Proof Gold American Eagles are the collector’s version of the nation’s official gold bullion product. The coin program as a whole was authorized in 1985 with passage of the Gold Bullion Coin Act by Congress. The legislation had special language that specified that all Gold American Eagles must contain only gold sourced from within the United States.

Although the ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagle was introduced in 1987, 1988 was also a significant year in the program’s history. It marked the introduction of two additional fractional-weight coins to the proof series; the ¼ oz and 1/10 oz coins.

On the obverse face of each coin is the image of Lady Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. He created the image in 1907, but died from illness just months before it appeared in circulation on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin.

The reverse of all Gold American Eagle coins bears Miley Busiek’s depiction of a family of bald eagles in the nest. In the image, a male bald eagle flies over the nest with an olive branch in its talons, while a female stands guard vigilantly over the hatchlings in the nest.

Each 1988-P ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagle in this listing has a PF70 grade from the NGC. Coins in this condition have their full, original luster, and no blemishes of any kind. Ultra-cameo is a term that defines a proof coin with a strong, frosted design set overlaying a deeply-mirrored, clear background.
