Gold American Eagle coins were first introduced in 1986 with a bullion and proof version. The bullion coins started with all four weights available the very first year, which consisted of a 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz variety. These ¼ oz Proof Gold American Eagles weren’t introduced until the second year of production.

The 1988-P ¼ oz Proof Gold American Eagle is from the very first year of fractional-weight coin production in the program. These coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint from 1988 until 1993, at which point production shifted to the West Point Mint. The latter mint is now the site of all Gold American Eagle coin production.

Each 1988-P ¼ oz Proof Gold American Eagle in this listing is in perfect proof condition according to the NGC. A PF70 grade indicates a coin with its full mint luster and no blemishes. The ultra-cameo designation is reserved for coins with a strong, frosted design overlaying a deeply-mirrored, clear background.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 depiction of Lady Liberty features on the obverse side of all Proof Gold American Eagle coins. The reverse of each coin bears Miley Busiek’s image of a family of nesting bald eagles, created exclusively for the Gold American Eagle series in 1986.

The United States Mint is one of the finest facilities in the world, and boasts a history that dates back to 1792. It currently operates four state-of-the-art facilities across the country.
