The United States Mint has struck Proof Gold American Eagle coins at two different mints during the program’s history. Originally, only the 1 oz coin was struck at the West Point Mint. All fractional-weight coins were originally produced at the Philadelphia Mint following the introduction of the ½ oz coins in 1987 and the ¼ oz and 1/10 oz coins in 1988.

Each of the coins available in this Silver.com product listing features a PF70 grade from the NGC. Coins in this condition still have full, original luster and no detracting flaws of any kind. Ultra-cameo is a term used to define coins with a strong, frosted finish on the design set that makes it appear to float above a background field that is deeply-mirrored and clear.

On the obverse face of each Gold American Eagle is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty depiction. Created in 1907, his design shows Liberty in full-length relief as she strides forward with the setting sun at her back, and the national capital at her feet. A torch in her right hand serves as a guiding light for the nation’s future.

The reverse of all Gold American Eagles features a family of nesting bald eagles. Designed in 1986 by Miley Busiek, the image includes a male bald eagle, a female, and a nest full of hatchlings.
