In 1986, the US Mint initiated its Gold Bullion Coin Program which authorized the mint to start producing the Gold American Eagle. Every year since, the coins have been minted in both proof and bullion versions with the same popular design. Proof coins are minted strictly for collectors and generally see much lower mintage numbers than bullion coins, making them highly sought after by collectors and numismatists.
Out of the 34,369 proof gold eagles minted in 1993, only roughly 437 of these coins have been graded by the NGC at this high grade. This makes them one of the rarer Certified Proof Gold Eagles available today.
Both bullion and proof gold eagles share a common design which has become appreciated by both the collecting and investing communities alike. This design shows a walking Lady Liberty on the obverse side with the word “LIBERTY” featured above and the minting year to the right. The reverse shows a family of eagles in their nest with the purity, weight and legal tender value.
