The Liberty Gold Eagle coin was designed by Christian Gobrecht. In this design, Lady Liberty is depicted in profile with a distinctive classic Greek/Roman influence. She wears a coronet embossed with the word LIBERTY. Her portrait is encircled in 13 five-pointed stars and the mint date is below.
The reverse side of this elegant coin features the American eagle in its classic coat of arms depiction with wings spread wide and a shield at its chest. The eagle clasps arrows in its left claw and an olive branch in its right. Coins dated 1866 and later are embossed with the words IN GOD WE TRUST above the eagle’s head. It is encircled with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and 2 ½ DOLLARS below.
