Liberty Gold Quarter Eagles are among the rarest coins from US history. It is not the design or gold content that makes the coin’s rare, or even their age, but rather the fact that each survived the Great Depression. Today is your chance to purchase a Pre-33 $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle from Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Ships in individual plastic flips or tubes of 50.
  • Contains .1209 ounces of .900 fine gold.
  • Issued a $2.50 (USD) face value by the federal government.
  • Available today in Extra Fine, or Extremely Fine, condition.
  • Designed by Christian Gobrecht.

As the nation struggled with the Great Depression, the federal government collected all gold coins in circulation and melted them down. This move to bolster the nation’s financial reserves bestowed rare status on the coins which survived the government’s collection effort.

The $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagles were struck between 1840 and 1907, making them one of the longest running coin series. However, because so many were collected and melted during the Depression, these coins are now very rare.

Each coin in this product listing is available in Extra Fine condition. Coins with an XF grade have light wear on the highest points of the design feature. Some of the original luster from the mint may still be visible on the coin as well.

On the reverse side of each coin is Gobrecht’s depiction of the heraldic eagle. The nation’s official emblem, the eagle is featured with a shield on its chest. In one talon, the arrows of war are clutched by the eagle, while the olive branch of peace is held by the other talon. The obverse side bears the image of Lady Liberty in left-profile relief, with a crown atop her head that includes the inscription “Liberty.”

The United States Mint produced these coins over 67 years at a variety of mint facilities. During that time period, San Francisco, New Orleans, Dahlonega, Charlotte, and Philadelphia Mints all contributed to production of these coins.
