Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic image of Lady Liberty was revived for use on the Gold American Eagle coins series in 1986, some 53 years after it disappeared from circulation on the obverse side of the $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle coin in 1933.

Saint-Gaudens was personally chosen by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905 to try and revive the design features of American gold coins. His depiction of Lady Liberty as a guiding force helping America charter a brighter path to a peaceful future is widely regarded as the finest image ever featured on an American coin.

Each of the 2002-W ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagles in this product listing earned a PF70 grade from the NGC. Perfect proofs such as these have their full, original luster and no blemishes. Ultra-cameo is a term used to define coins with frosted designs that appear to float above deeply-mirrored background fields.

On the obverse side of the coin is Saint-Gaudens’ depiction of Liberty. It was updated for this coin series to include 50 stars, rather than 48, around Liberty to account for the additions of Hawaii and Alaska to the Union in the decade following the end of World War II.

The reverse side features a design created exclusively for the Gold American Eagle. Sculptor Miley Busiek created an image that shows a male bald eagle returning the family nest, where a female guards a group of hatchlings.
