In 2014, the Perth Mint released this Silver Australian Year of the Horse Coin as the second installment in its Australian Lunar Series, an exclusive collection inspired by the different creatures of the Chinese Zodiac Calendar. Each special edition coin is composed of 5 troy ounces of 99.9% pure silver and has a face value of $8 AUD. These coins are now available in newly minted condition and ship in their original plastic coin capsule.
On the back of the coin, artist Tom Vaughan has depicted a pair of horses standing at the edge of a river bank. One of them has lowered its head for a drink, while the other stares wistfully into the distance, perhaps contemplating the journey ahead of them. Serving as a backdrop is a picturesque hillside complete with a native Chinese white pine tree. To complete his design, Vaughan incorporates a “Ma” or Chinese symbol for horse in the upper area of the coin along with the phrase “Year of the Horse” at the bottom. From the Asian design principles to traditional Chinese calligraphy, viewers are certain to be impressed by how authentically this piece demonstrates eastern aesthetics.
While the back of the coin pays tribute to the Chinese culture, the obverse side serves as a tribute to Great Britain and its monarchy with a portrait of Elizabeth II. Crowned in her jeweled tiara, the regal monarch reflects Australia’s pride in both its heritage and its present status as a member of the British Commonwealth. The unity between these two nations is further emphasized by the inscription above the effigy that includes the queen’s title alongside Australia’s name. Appearing beneath the portrait are the coin’s weight, purity, mintage year and denomination.
