The 2015 2 oz. Silver Australian Goat is part of the Perth Mint’s Lunar Series 2. In the Chinese Zodiac, the Year of the Goat includes the following birthdates: 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, and 2015. The goat is the eighth animal in the Chinese Zodiac. Those individuals born during the Year of the Goat are said to be shy, sympathetic, and calm.
The Perth Mint previously produced a Year of the Goat coin for their Lunar Series 1 in 2003. This year’s design, however, was created by Natasha Muhl. Her image includes a family of long-haired goats grazing in their natural habitat. One goat has its head down, grazing in the grass, while the other two have their heads raised in vigilance.
On the opposite side of the coin is Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. While investors can purchase this coin in brilliant, uncirculated condition, the Government of Australia deems this coin legal tender with a face value of $2.
Muhl’s image of the goat family is featured on the reverse side of the coin. Above her image is the Chinese character for “goat,” with the phrase “Year of the Goat” below. On the obverse side, Rank-Broadley’s image of Queen Elizabeth II is featured with the words “Elizabeth II, Australia” stamped above, and the weight, purity, value, and minting year stamped below.
The Perth Mint is the last remaining mint constructed during Australia’s gold rush in the 19th century. The Perth Mint was the final mint constructed by the Royal Mint of London to handle refinement and production of gold bullion in what was then the colony of Australia. The Sydney Mint and Melbourne Mint (1855 and 1872) both opened before the Perth Mint, but have since closed.
