The Silver American Eagle was introduced in 1986 as the nation’s official silver bullion coin, reviving the Walking Liberty design that hadn’t been used on American currency in 39 years. Created by Adolph A. Weinman, it is considered one of the nation’s finest coin designs of all time, right up there with the Liberty design from Augustus Saint-Gaudens and George T. Morgan’s Morgan Silver Dollar.

Each Silver American Eagle in this product listing is a perfect proof, with a PR70 grade from the PCGS. Coins in this condition show full, original mint luster on the surface and lack any type of detracting flaws.

The obverse bears that Walking Liberty design from Weinman. Originally created in 1916, it appeared on the nation’s half-dollar coin from 1916 to 1947. On the reverse is John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle design. Mercanti had just taken over as Chief Engraver of the United States Mint in 1986 when he modernized and refined the heraldic eagle design for this coin program. Mercanti held that post until he retired in 2010.
