Each year the Perth Mint releases a diverse offering of Lunar Series II coins. Originally available in bullion and proof for Lunar Series I, the follow-up series from Perth comes in a variety of different finishes, such as high-relief proof, typeset collections, colorized finishes, and these special gemstone coins.
The Year of the Monkey is the ninth creature on the Zodiac, known as the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The Perth Mint has produced a special gemstone coin for the previous Lunar Series II coins.
For the 2016 1 Kilo Silver Australian Monkey Gemstone Coin, the Perth Mint engravers added cognac diamonds into the eyes of the adult monkey in the design. The basic design of this coin is the same as the Year of the Monkey silver design, the only differences being the addition of the gemstone and colorized finish.
On the reverse face of the coin is the 2016 Year of the Monkey design. Two monkeys, one adult and one youth, are featured sitting in a peach tree. The symbolism is meant to represent longevity and immortality. The obverse bears the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.
The Perth Mint is the preeminent producer of lunar-inspired coins. Originally founded as part of the Royal Mint system in British controlled Australia, the Perth Mint today is a state-owned entity of Western Australia.
