The Austrian Philharmonic coin is Europe’s most popular coin today, especially the silver variant. The coin program originated in 1989 with a gold version, and was on its own for nearly two decades before the silver variant was introduced. At the recent Berlin Coin Fair, the Austrian Mint unveiled an all-new version of the coin. For the first time ever, the 2016 Platinum Austrian Philharmonic coin is available in BU condition on Silver.com.

The Austrian Mint unveiled the all-new Platinum Austrian Philharmonic coin at the Berlin Coin Fair in January 2016, adding to its popular Austrian Philharmonic coin series for the first time since 2008.

Austrian Philharmonic coins debuted in 1989 with the Gold Austrian Philharmonic, featuring a winning design from Head Designer of the Austrian Mint, Thomas Pesendorfer. His design was so popular that it was used in 2008 when the Austrian Mint introduced the Silver Austrian Philharmonic coin.

Now the Austrian Mint is expanding the program once again with the addition of a platinum version of the coin. The new Platinum Austrian Philharmonic coin features .9995 fine platinum and a face value listed in Euros. The coins will only be available in a 1 oz variety, and are expected to be minted to meet demand, just like the gold and silver variants.

Thomas Pesendorfer’s design is featured on both faces of the new Platinum Austrian Philharonic, with the obverse using the pipe organ design. The Golden Music Hall, known as the Musikverein, is the theater where the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra performs.

On the reverse side of the coin is a collection of musical instruments that members of the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra use, and it includes a bassoon, cello, violins, and the French horn. Engravings on all faces of the coin are featured in German, the official language of Austria.
