On the reverse of all 2017 Gold Somalian Elephant coins you’ll find the same image used since 2004 when the series debuted, the coat of arms for Somalia. It features a single star, like the national flag, but set on the heraldic shield with a background of horizontal lines. The nation of issue, year of issue, and face value of the coin are engraved on this side.
The obverse of the 2017 ¼ oz Gold Somalian Elephant coin has the latest elephant image in the series. The world’s largest land mammal, this image depicts a bush elephant as it stands amidst the grasses of the Savannah. In the background you’ll see one small hut with a palm tree rising above it, and the sun (moon) rising near the edge of the design field.
These 2017 ¼ oz Gold Somalian Elephant coins are one of two first-ever fractional-weight release for the year. Along with the ½ oz coin, these are newcomers to the Gold Somalian Elephant lineup. The larger series now features gold, silver, and platinum coins in both bullion and proof versions.
