Silver American Eagle bullion coins have the best sales volume of any coin in the world right now. Unsteady economic markets and rising silver prices have driven demand for these coins to new heights. While 2016 sales fell short of recent high-water marks at just 37 million sold, the Silver American Eagle is still the top seller in the world right now.
On the obverse of the coin is Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design, introduced in 1916 on the nation’s half-dollar coin. The reverse features a modernized version of the heraldic eagle. Originally used as early as 1794 on American coinage, this particular version is from then-US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti, whose version debuted in 1986 on the first Silver American Eagle coins.
All 2017 1 oz Silver American Eagle coins are a product of the United States Mint. These coins have been struck by numerous mints in the US Mint system, but today all bullion coins are produced predominantly at the West Point Mint, with supplemental production at the San Francisco Mint. The latter used to handle all production of bullion coins when the Silver Eagle was introduced.
