Each 2017 Proof Platinum American Eagle coin listed here today is available with a perfect certification. Coins in PR70 condition exhibit full, original mint luster and lack all detracting flaws on the surface areas.
As DCAM coins, these proof specimens have deep, frosted devices and a deeply-mirrored, clear background field that results in the design appearing to float above the coin’s design field. The First Strike label is only available to coins received by the PCGS for certification within the first 30 days of the US Mint’s 2017 release date for Platinum Eagles.
For the 20th anniversary of the Proof Platinum American Eagle, the United States Mint is reviving Thomas D. Rogers’ Eagle Soaring Above America design. The Proof Platinum Eagle has a new design on the reverse each year, with various design themes rolled out over the years. Bald eagles dominated the reverse from 1997 to 2003, but Rogers’ design has not appeared on the reverse since 1997.
On the reverse of the 2017-W 1 oz Proof Platinum American Eagle Coin is Rogers’ original design for the coins. While it has appeared on the bullion coin since 1997, it has never been reused on the proof and makes its brilliant return on the 20th anniversary of the coin’s initial release.
The obverse of Proof Platinum Eagles feature the iconic design that has graced the coin since 1997. John Mercanti, former Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, designed this close-up image of the Statue of Liberty’s face.
All Proof Platinum American Eagle coins are produced at the West Point Mint in New York, the primary home of American Eagle coinage from the United States Mint. The “W” mint mark on the reverse notes this fact.
