On the obverse side of each coin is the image of Walking Liberty, which was created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman. This design is considered one of the most iconic in American history, and featured on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar from 1916 to 1947.
The reverse bears the modern version of the heraldic eagle. Originally used on the some of the first coins ever struck by the United States Mint, the Silver American Eagle features a modern depiction created by then-US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti. He has since retired from the Mint (2010), and his post remains vacant to this day.
