The Gold American Eagle is among the most popular gold bullion coin offered by the US Mint. The series was first started in 1986, and the coins have contained the same design since. Among the most popular versions in the series are the Proof coins which are minted each year in conjunction with the bullion version. Proof Gold Eagles are produced in much lower numbers each year and are produced specifically with collectors in mind.
During 1994, a total of only 46,674 1 oz Proof Gold Eagles were minted, compared to over 222,000 bullion coins. Out of this amount only about 1.5% are available with a perfect PF70 UCAM grade from the NGC. These coins ship in protective coin slabs which display their grade, minting year and a special serial number which can be authenticated via the NGC website.
