Deep-cameo is a designation used to describe proof coins with a finish that creates the illusion of a design set floating above the background of the coin. This is achieved through a strong, frosted finish on the Lady Liberty design, and a deeply-mirrored, clear background field.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens was chosen personally by President Theodore Roosevelt to help revive the nation’s gold coinage in 1905. Saint-Gaudens developed an image of Lady Liberty in full-length figure, with her hair and robes flowing in the wind as she bravely guided the nation forward into the darkness of an unknown future.

Originally used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle, Saint-Gaudens design was refined and updated for use on the Gold American Eagle in 1986. Today it features on the obverse of all Gold American Eagle coins.

Sculptor and artist Miley Busiek had worked on multiple public and private works of art before the US Mint commissioned her to create the reverse imagery for the Gold American Eagle in 1986. Her design depicts a family of nesting bald eagles, and is used exclusively on this coin program.
