Lunar Series II coins are available in a variety of precious metal contents and versions. The Year of the Monkey coin is struck in both silver and gold, with a wide variety of weights available in the gold version. In addition to the 2016 ¼ oz Gold Australian Monkey Coin, there are Year of the Monkey coins in 1/10 oz, 1/20 oz, ½ oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 Kilogram weights as well.
The Perth Mint has established an unlimited mintage for all coins in the Gold Australian Monkey series with the exception of the 1 oz coin. This means the Perth Mint will strike as many coins as demanded by the market until the end of 2015, at which point the mint will declare the final mintage and the design will be retired.
On the reverse side of the coin is Ing Ing Jong’s design for the Gold Australian Monkey. Different from her design for the silver version, the gold coin does bear similar appearances. On the gold version, a single monkey is featured in a peach tree glancing at a peach dangling above its head.
The obverse feature the familiar right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Although this image is a fourth-generation design, with a fifth-generation design introduced in July 2015, the Perth Mint is staying with the design from Ian Rank-Broadley to maintain continuity in the design of Lunar Series II coins.
