Gold Australian Monkey coins honor the Year of the Monkey on the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The Zodiac, as it is known in the West, is a 12-year cycle that presents 12 different animals as representative of the characteristics and traits of individuals born under that symbol.
For the Year of the Monkey, individuals born during this period are said to be optimistic, fun-loving, intelligent, and adventurous. Zodiac traits are said to have a positive and negative side, meaning these characteristics sometimes materialize as causing harm to others and being egotistical.
The obverse bears the image of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s right-profile effigy is featured in the center, with engravings of her name, the nation of issue, year of issue, and face value surrounding the design. Ian Rank-Broadley designed this particular image in 1998.
On the reverse is the all-new Year of the Monkey design. Similar in concept to the silver version, the Gold Australian Monkey bears the image of a lone monkey as it sits on the branch of a peach tree. It is featured looking back over its shoulder at a piece of fruit dangling from the branches above.
Each coin available today is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, meaning you’ll see no signs of wear and tear, but possibly some flaws from production.
Australia’s Perth Mint was opened in 1898 as part of the British Royal Mint system. Today it is a state-owned entity of the government of Western Australia, and is not affiliated with the Royal Australian Mint. However, its products are considered legal tender under the Currency Act of 1965.
