The Lady Liberty design from Augustus Saint-Gaudens on the Gold American Eagle features America’s beloved Liberty in full-length figure, her Greek gown flowing in the breeze as she stride s confidently forward out of the setting sun. In Saint-Gaudens’ original design, the US Capitol Building is featured at her feet and she is surrounded by 46 stars. This image was updated for the Gold Eagle, with the addition of two stars from the 1912 design (48 stars) reflect Hawaii and Ala ska’s admission to the Union.
Only the 1/10 oz coin in the Proof Gold American Eagle series has shown stronger annual sales figures than the ¼ oz Proof Gold American Eagle coin. However, recent years have seen demand shift again to the ends of the spectrum, with demand for the 1 oz and 1/10 oz coins (largest and smallest) surpassing the two middle offerings.
From the moment it was unveiled in 1988, the ¼ oz Proof Gold American Eagle has proven to be one of the most popular options in the entire Gold Eagle inventory. In its first year of availability, the ¼ oz coin outsold the 1 oz coin by 11,000 coins and the ¼ oz coin by 22,000 coins.
On the obverse of each 2017-W ¼ oz Proof Gold American Eagle coin is the image of Lady Liberty, surrounded by 50 stars with images of Washington DC visible at her feet. Her body is silhouetted by the rays of the rising sun in the background. Augustus Saint-Gaudens created this design originally in 1907 for use on the $20 Gold Double Eagle.
The reverse image is exclusive to the Gold American Eagle, and was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek. Her design features a family of nesting bald eagles, and is accompanied by engravings that include the coin’s face value, weight, metal content, and purity.
