There are many symbols that people around the world associate with the nation of Canada. While some think of the rugged Rocky Mountains or the frozen tundra in the north, the maple leaf is the most easily recognized symbol of Canada. Hockey teams across the country use the maple leaf as a logo, and the national flag has a giant, red maple leaf as the heart of its design. The Royal Canadian Mint pays homage to this national symbol on the Silver Canadian Maple Leaf coin. The Silver Canadian Maple Leaf is the official silver bullion coin of the government of Canada. Silver Canadian Maple Leaf coins were first minted and distributed by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1988, which means the 1998 1 oz Silver Canadian Maple Leaf is the 10th anniversary coin in the series. The designs used on the obverse and reverse sides of the coin were designed by Susanna Blunt (obverse) and the Royal Canadian Mint engravers (reverse).
Few changes have been made to either design over the course of the coin’s production history. Queen Elizabeth II’s image on the obverse side has been updated to reflect her age, resulting in three different images of Her Majesty. The maple leaf has changed little, receiving only minor enhancements to the level of detail used in minting.
Blunt’s right-profile image of Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the coin’s obverse. Above Her Majesty’s head is the engraving “Elizabeth II,” while the face value and year of minting are included below. The reverse side of the coin features the image of a maple leaf in the middle, with engravings of “Canada,” the purity of the coin, and the phrase “Fine Silver 1 oz Argent Pur.”
Founded in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint was initially established to process and refine gold found in the Yukon Territories during the late-19th and early-20th centuries. The RCM operates three different facilities throughout the country and is responsible for the production of all circulation currency used by the government of Canada.
