Silver American Eagle Coins were first struck in October 1986 at the San Francisco Mint, the coining home of the Silver Eagle until 1998. The federal government dipped into the Defense National Stockpile of silver to produce the Silver Eagle bullion coins for sale to investors to generate additional funds for the US Treasury.

As was the case with the Gold Eagle introduced in the same year, the US Mint looked to the history books for a design for the new coin. The Silver American Eagle’s obverse design of Liberty borrowed from the circulation half-dollar coin issued between 1916 and 1947.

On the obverse of 2019 Silver American Eagle Coins is the image of Lady Liberty. This left-profile portrait of Liberty depicts her walking toward the sun on the horizon as a sign of the nation’s march toward a brighter future. Liberty has one hand outstretched toward the horizon with the American flag over her shoulders and the oak and laurel branches in her left hand.

The reverse of 2019 Silver Eagles features the heraldic eagle of the United States. In this modernized design by John Mercanti, the bald eagle is set behind the heraldic shield of the nation as it clutches the arrows of war and olive branch of peace in its talons. There is a cluster of 13 stars arranged in a triangle above its head as a nod to the original 13 colonies of America.
