The Perth Mint has a rich tradition of introducing silver bullion coin programs that shine a light on the many native wildlife species from the diverse Australian continent. The kookaburra and kangaroo were the first such collections, debuting in 1990 in silver and gold, respectively. Over the decades, new programs have been introduced with different animals featured on the coins. The latest animal to join the stable of Perth Mint coins is the wombat. The wombat is the third marsupial to feature in these major collections alongside its cousins the koala and kangaroo. Many of the world’s marsupial species are endemic to the Australian continent.

On the obverse of 2021 Silver Australian Wombats is a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. Throughout her reign, Queen Elizabeth II has been captured on British and Commonwealth coinage in right-profile relief. This is in keeping with the British tradition for monarch portraits. As her father, King George VI, was depicted in left-profile relief during his reign, tradition dictates that Elizabeth II’s portraits be in right-profile relief. This design was created in July 2015 by Jody Clark and originally debuted on British coins from the Royal Mint.
The reverse side of the 2021 1 oz Silver Wombats features the pudgy, muscular wombat. A marsupial that has an adaptable nature, the wombat is considered a habit-tolerant species as it lives across a variety of biomes on the Australian continent to include forested regions, mountainous regions, and dryer shrubland regions.
