In 2022, the Proof Silver American Eagle is back for a 36th year and moves on from its 35th-anniversary year in 2021 with the new image of the American bald eagle on the reverse. This marks the first full year for the new design from Emily Damstra, as it shared the limelight in 2021 with the original design as the latter made its last appearance in the series. One of the most popular options for Proof Silver Eagle buyers remains certified specimens. In 1986, the United States Mint introduced the Silver Eagle coins. The series is available with only a 1 oz silver option and was first offered in BU and Proof. In 2006, the series gained a second collectible coin in the form of the Burnished Silver Eagle. Though there are two collectible versions of the coin, the Proof Silver Eagle remains the more popular of the two.
In 2021, the mint introduced the first-ever change to the visuals in this series. While Walking Liberty remains on the obverse, a new vision of the bald eagle was introduced on the reverse. As 2021 was the 35th anniversary of the series, the mint issued the coins in two waves. The original design was offered through the first half of the year, followed by the new design in the second half of the year.
The obverse of 2022-W 1 oz Proof Silver Eagles features Walking Liberty. Adolph A. Weinman created this image of Liberty in left-profile relief in 1916 and based his design on a popular French coin design from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. That design was known as the Sower and showed a similar female figure walking toward the left with a hand extended as she spread seeds in a field.
On the reverse of 2022-W Proof Silver Eagles is Emily Damstra’s vision of the American bald eagle. This design shows the bald eagle descending into view with a large oak branch held in its talons.
These 2022-W 1 oz Proof Silver American Eagles come with a PR70 grade. Coins in this condition showcase full, original mint luster and no detractions. DCAM stands for deep-cameo and points to the presence of strong, frosted designs overlaying deeply-mirrored, clear fields. First Strike is a designation for coins received for certification within 30 days of release from the mint.
