Gold Panda coins from the Chinese Mint were issued for the first time in 1982. The coins debuted with a 1 oz gold coin alongside three fractional weights: 1/10 oz, ¼ oz, and these ½ oz coins. In 1983, the Gold Panda collection expanded to include a 1/20 oz coin as well.
From 1982 to 2015, the Chinese Mint issued the coins with weight measurements in the international standard of Troy ounces. However, starting in 2016 the Chinese Mint moved to set the coins apart from other gold bullion coins by striking the coins with a new weight measurement in Grams instead.
On the obverse of the ½ oz Gold Chinese Panda Coin is the depiction of the Temple of Heaven complex. A collection of religious structures in the south-central neighborhoods of Beijing, the Temple of Heaven has long been a religious site. Initially used by emperors and citizens to pray for good harvests and pray to the heavens, the temples eventually became a Taoist religious site.
The reverse of the Gold Chinese Panda coin includes the depiction of a Giant Panda. These designs change with each new release year but always remain focused on the panda species. These bars are iconic symbols of the People’s Republic of China and live in the nation’s mountainous highlands in the south.
