The 12-year cycle of the Zodiac includes a different animal for each year, but the position of these animals in the cycle was not chosen at random. It is said the Jade Emperor assigned each animal its position in the Zodiac based on its arrival to a meeting the emperor called with all the animals of the world. These 12 were the only ones to arrive.
