Proof Gold American Eagles featured a staggered rollout. The 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle was issued alone in 1986. In 1987, the US Mint expanded the series with the addition of the 1/2 oz Proof Gold Eagle. The 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz Proof Gold Eagles were first issued in 1988.
On the obverse of all Proof Gold American Eagle Coins is the image of Lady Liberty. This landmark design came from Augustus Saint-Gaudens and was created in 1907 for the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin. It remained in circulation on that coin from 1907 to 1933.
The reverse of 1 oz Proof Gold American Eagles includes an exclusive design. Miley Busiek created this design in 1986 for use on the Gold Eagles and it depicts a male eagle flying over the nest with an olive branch in its talons. The female eagle within is guarding a young hatchling under her wing.
