The Gadsden Flag carried into battle against the British Army by Continental Marines during the Revolutionary War featured the most significant rallying cry in American history. While other calls such as those invoking the USS Maine’s explosion or the attack on Pearl Harbor galvanized the nation into action, none was more significant in pulling together 13 individual colonies to fight for independence. The Gadsden Flag was created in 1775 by Christopher Gadsden, an American general and politician during the Revolutionary War. Continental Marines were the first to carry the design on a battle flag. The common design included a coiled rattlesnake ready to strike with the phrase “Don’t Tread On Me” featured below the snake’s figure.
This common saying became a rallying cry among American colonials who were tired of Britain unilaterally making decisions that impacted their daily life. Among the chief problems, Americans cited in their march to war was taxation without representation. Though many Americans had originally come from England, they were viewed as second-class citizens by the British government and taxes could be levied without a colonial representative onsite to provide insight on the reaction in America and how it would impact the colonies.
On the obverse of 1 oz Silver Shield Don’t Tread On Me Rounds, you’ll find a powerful and muscular rattlesnake coiled with its fangs exposed and its tongue out as it warns all nearby that it is ready to strike. The popular phrase is featured above the snake in this design.
The reverse face of Silver Shield Don’t Tread On Me Rounds includes the design of a sword standing on its tip with ornate designs surrounding it throughout the background field. Engravings feature the metal content, weight, purity, and date mark of the silver rounds.
