Stephen F. Austin, the Father of Texas, created the unofficial Texas Rangers in 1823 with a call to arms for men to “ride the ranges” of southern and western Texas in defense of newly settled families in the region. These men played a major role in helping early families settling the area survive against attacks from native tribes and outlaw Mexicans.
Over the next 12 years, these men became legends among Texians living in the Mexican-controlled region of Texas. When the simmering tensions between Texians and Mexico broke out into war, the Texas Rangers changed from a paramilitary force into a law enforcement agency that gained official status with the new Republic of Texas in 1835 following Texian victory against Mexico.
Each one of these 1 oz Silver Texas Ranger Wagon Wheel Badge Rounds recreates the original badges handed out to Rangers to help differentiate and identify them among other law enforcement in the state.
On the obverse of the 1 oz Silver Texas Ranger Wagon Wheel Badge Round you’ll find one of the first Lone Star of Texas designs. Its five points reach out and make contact with an outer rim design known as the Wagon Wheel, with engravings on this face including “Co. A” in the star for Company A of the Rangers, and “Texas Rangers” around the rim.
The reverse of the Silver Texas Ranger Badge Round depicts the image of the Mexican 5 Peso silver coin. The first Texas Ranger badges were issued around 1889 and Mexican 5 Peso silver coins were used as the base for them. The image of the Ring of Serpents of the Aztec “Piedra del Sol” is featured in the center with “Estados Unidos Mexicanos” on the outer rim.
