Gold Pandas from the Chinese Mint debuted in 1982 with coins marked in Troy ounce weights. The original coins included 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins, with a 1/20 oz gold coin added to the series in 1983. From 1982/83 to 2015, the coins maintained these five options in Troy ounces. In 2016, the series changed.
The main bullion coins were now offered as 30 Gram, 15 Gram, 8 Gram, 3 Gram, and 1 Gram coins. To mark the monumental change in the series, the Chinese Mint issued a number of proof gold and proof silver coins. These coins have the same annual designs on each coin as the bullion versions.
The obverse of the 150 Gram Proof Gold Chinese Pandas includes a depiction of the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This design captures the exterior facade of the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, which is the largest building in the Temple of Heaven Complex. The temple is one of the four major Taoist religious sites in the city of Beijing.
On the reverse face of 150 Gram Proof Gold Chinese Pandas is a new depiction of the Giant Panda with each date mark. The Chinese Mint has used a new image of the Giant Panda in every year since the series launched, with the one exception being the 2002 coin. The Giant Panda is a unique bear species that is native to the central highlands of China.
