These large-format $2 notes were originally printed during the Civil War to satisfy debts incurred by the Union. However, following the war, the Treasury continued to print legal tender notes up until 1971. As such, they are considered the longest-running paper currency program in U.S. history. Now, 1862 $2 Legal Tender Notes in Very Good condition are available to you online at Silver.com.

Note Highlights:

  • Arrives to you in a PMG plastic currency sleeve!
  • Civil War issue!
  • Vintage large format style!
  • Bears a face value of $2 (USD) backed by the United States.
  • Graded Very Good 10 by the Paper Money Guaranty.
  • The obverse field contains a portrait of Alexander Hamilton.
  • On the reverse side, there are denomination and obligation details.

All $2 Legal Tender Notes in this online listing will arrive in clear plastic currency sleeves. These sleeves include a label bearing the official grading details from the Paper Money Guaranty. According to PMG, these notes fit the criteria for the Very Good 10 classification. As such, they will appear fairly limp with clear signs of circulation. Overall, the note is deemed solid and whole.

Issued from 1862 until 1971, the legal tender note is the longest-running paper currency program in US history. However, this 109-year record is set to be eclipsed in 2024 by the Federal Reserve note. Legal tender notes were originally printed in large format with some of the most exquisite and complex artwork ever created for US currency. Then in 1928, a small format was introduced that has much more in common aesthetically with the paper currency of today.

An effigy of Alexander Hamilton is found on the obverse of 1862 Legal Tender Notes. In this design, Hamilton is depicted in right-profile relief just to the left of the note’s center. The coloring of this note mainly consists of black and green. However, the note’s number and Treasury seal appear in red. In the upper corners, you will also find the shield from the US Seal along with the words E Pluribus Unum.

Denomination details and obligation language is found on the reverse of these Legal Tender Notes. The denomination is located in the four corners as well as on two rings that surround the center of the note. The obligation language is contained in the center and confirms these notes as legal tender. Also, there are heavy horizontal decorative lines running across the field in a parallel fashion.

Where does your spot price come from?

We use a live, up-to-the-second spot price feed supplied by Xignite.com, a worldwide leader in the data supply market.

Are your products actually in stock?

Yes. We are one of the few bullion dealers in the industry who only deems products "in stock" when we have them on-hand and ready to ship immediately. In the instance of a presale item, we denote that the product is on presale and the estimated shipping date. While we make the best efforts to hit presale dates, the dates are only estimates, given we cannot control mint production issues and/or carrier dealyes.

Why are multiple prices listed?

We offer a 4% discount to "cash" paying customers - with paper check, bank wire, and bitcoin payments being defined as cash. On many products, we are also able to offer volume discounts to customers purchasing large quantities of the same item. All volume pricing is laid out in the chart on the product's description page, as well as in the cart.

When do I lock in my price?

All prices are locked in at the time of purchase. Credit/debit card, PayPal, BitCoin, Ethereum, and Ripple orders are paid at the time of checkout, while paper check and bank wire orders require a credit/debit card on file to lock in your pricing while we await your payment. Please note, paper check and bank wire orders will NOT result in a charge to your card - we simple maintain the card on file while we await full payment by your selected payment method.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently only ship to addresses in the United States, including APOs.
