In 1879, the Morgan Silver Dollar was in its second year of production, with the US Mint significantly increasing coin output. Notably, the San Francisco Mint was one of the two mints that consistently issued Morgan Dollars each year. Now, you have the opportunity to own 1879-S Silver Morgan Dollar Coins in certified condition, available for purchase on Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Each coin is securely encased in NGC protective plastic slabs!
  • This coin represents the second year in the Silver Morgan Dollar Series!
  • The San Francisco Mint produced a total of 9,110,000!
  • Availability of certified coins is limited.
  • Every coin consists of 0.7734 Troy ounces of actual silver.
  • These coins were originally issued with a face value of $1 (USD) by the United States.
  • They have received a Mint State 65 grade from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.
  • The obverse side showcases the elegant Lady Liberty.
  • On the reverse, you’ll find the depiction of the heraldic eagle.
  • Each coin is marked with an ‘S’ mint mark, indicating it was produced in San Francisco.

The 1878 debut of the Morgan Silver Dollars included coins from the Philadelphia Mint, Carson City Mint, and the San Francisco Mint. In 1879, the New Orleans Mint resumed production after a long hiatus during the US Civil War and the Reconstruction Era.

Mintage figures for 1879 had variations. Philadelphia produced 14.8 million coins, while San Francisco saw a slight drop to 9,110,000 from the previous year. Carson City Mint experienced a significant decrease from 2,212,000 to 756,000 in 1879. However, the addition of 2.887 million coins from New Orleans significantly boosted overall production in 1879 compared to 1878.

The obverse of the 1879-S Silver Morgan Dollar features a bust of Lady Liberty, designed in 1878 by George T. Morgan. It depicts Liberty’s head in left-profile relief with a Phrygian cap at the back. She also wears a coronet crown and laurel wreath in her hair.

On the reverse side of the 1879 Morgan Dollars, you’ll find Morgan’s interpretation of the heraldic eagle. This eagle lacks a US national shield but portrays the front-facing bald eagle with wings spread, clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.

These 1879-S Silver Morgan Dollar Coins are available in Mint State 65 condition. Coins with this grade display high-quality mint luster with a few scattered small contact marks or two larger marks. You may also find one or two small patches of hairlines and some noticeable light scuff marks.

Are your products actually in stock?

Yes. We are one of the few bullion dealers in the industry who only deems products "in stock" when we have them on-hand and ready to ship immediately. In the instance of a presale item, we denote that the product is on presale and the estimated shipping date. While we make the best efforts to hit presale dates, the dates are only estimates, given we cannot control mint production issues and/or carrier dealyes.

Why are multiple prices listed?

We offer a 4% discount to "cash" paying customers - with paper check, bank wire, and bitcoin payments being defined as cash. On many products, we are also able to offer volume discounts to customers purchasing large quantities of the same item. All volume pricing is laid out in the chart on the product's description page, as well as in the cart.

When do I lock in my price?

All prices are locked in at the time of purchase. Credit/debit card, PayPal, BitCoin, Ethereum, and Ripple orders are paid at the time of checkout, while paper check and bank wire orders require a credit/debit card on file to lock in your pricing while we await your payment. Please note, paper check and bank wire orders will NOT result in a charge to your card - we simple maintain the card on file while we await full payment by your selected payment method.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently only ship to addresses in the United States, including APOs.
