The second design featured on the United States five-cent piece was the Liberty Head design. Introduced by the US Mint in 1883, the Liberty Head V Nickel was produced by the United States Mint from 1883 to 1912. In the initial months of production, the Liberty Head Nickel came with no inscription of the word CENTS to accompany the Roman numeral V. Now, 1883 Liberty Head V Nickels are available to you for purchase online from Silver.com in certified condition.

  • The obverse side of the coin features Liberty.

  • Unique releases without the word CENTS!

Prior to the release of the US Nickel in 1866, the United States Mint had previously issued silver coins known as Half Dimes as early as the 1790s when the United States Mint opened. The Half Dime had the same face value as the US Nickel, but its silver content made the coin’s metallic value much higher than its assigned face value.

During the chaos of the Civil War, the Half Dime disappeared from circulation and the production of new five-cent pieces did not resume until 1866. Industrialist Joseph Wharton advocated for the use of nickel in the new five-cent pieces, though he had a personal interest as he controlled countless nickel mining operations across the country. In 1866, the first US Nickel was released. In 1883, that troublesome first design was replaced by the new Liberty Head V Nickel.

The obverse side of 1883 Liberty Head V Nickels comes with a depiction of Lady Liberty. This bust shows a left-profile effigy of Liberty with a coronet crown and a laurel wreath. Designed by Charles Barber, then serving as the 6th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Liberty’s figure is surrounded by 13 stars with a date mark of 1883 at the bottom.

On the reverse field of the 1883 Liberty Head Nickels, you will find the Roman numeral V that gives this design series its name. The Roman numeral V was the designation of the coin’s face value of five cents. Crucially, these particular coins lack the word CENTS that was added later in 1883.

These 1883 Liberty Head V Nickels are in Mint State 65 condition. Coins with this grade showcase an attractive, high-quality luster. The coins have flaws that include the potential for small, scattered contact marks, two larger marks, one or two small patches of hairlines, and even light scuff marks.

Are your products actually in stock?

Yes. We are one of the few bullion dealers in the industry who only deems products "in stock" when we have them on-hand and ready to ship immediately. In the instance of a presale item, we denote that the product is on presale and the estimated shipping date. While we make the best efforts to hit presale dates, the dates are only estimates, given we cannot control mint production issues and/or carrier dealyes.

Why are multiple prices listed?

We offer a 4% discount to "cash" paying customers - with paper check, bank wire, and bitcoin payments being defined as cash. On many products, we are also able to offer volume discounts to customers purchasing large quantities of the same item. All volume pricing is laid out in the chart on the product's description page, as well as in the cart.

When do I lock in my price?

All prices are locked in at the time of purchase. Credit/debit card, PayPal, BitCoin, Ethereum, and Ripple orders are paid at the time of checkout, while paper check and bank wire orders require a credit/debit card on file to lock in your pricing while we await your payment. Please note, paper check and bank wire orders will NOT result in a charge to your card - we simple maintain the card on file while we await full payment by your selected payment method.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently only ship to addresses in the United States, including APOs.
