While there were no significant changes in the Proof Sets from 1984 to 1985, the US Mint sold more than 614,000 more Proof Sets in 1985 than it sold in 1984. They sold a total of 3,362,821 1985 Proof Sets. Having no other apparent reason for this increase, it was assumed to be the lack of a Prestige Set in 1985 that had led to this increase. The 1985 Proof Set was still a 5 coin set, with a face value of $0.91 and an original issue price of $11.00. Nearly all coins in the Set will be found with deep cameo finishes. This Set was made by the US Mint in San Francisco. Right now, these 1985 US Mint Proof Sets are available for purchase online from Silver.com.

The US Mint designed new packaging for its Proof Sets that it began using in 1983. It actually was the design that was utilized starting in 1968. The coins are placed in individual holes in a purple textured cardboard holder, that is then sealed in a plastic holder. This arrangement is then placed into a purple outer box, which has a flap at the top to open and close the box. This is the packaging used for the 1985 Proof Sets.
Each Proof Set consists of one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar.
In addition to new packaging in 1983, the US Mint started issuing Prestige Proof Sets. These Prestige Proof Sets included the 5 coins of the standard Proof Set and also typically one or both of the half dollar and silver dollar from the particular year’s commemorative coin program. The Prestige Proof Sets were offered through 1997. However, there was one year – 1985 – that the Mint did not offer a Prestige Proof Set, and that is deemed to be the reason for the sizeable jump in standard Proof Set sales this year.
