The official US Mint Sets contain uncirculated specimens of each of the coins used in circulation in 1985. They are issued in official government packaging and are in brilliant uncirculated condition. The US Mint produces these coins using base metals, thus they are generally less expensive than Proof Sets of the same year, making them easier to purchase for collectors or those people wishing to begin collecting. And since they are issued by the government, their quality and authenticity is guaranteed. The 1985 Mint Set contains 10 coins. Silver.com currently has these 1985 US Mint Sets available for purchase online.

The Mint Set contains two packages – one package from the Denver Mint and one package from the Philadelphia Mint. Each Mint’s package contains 5 coins – one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar. Each Mint’s package also includes a cent-sized token indicating which Mint produced the coins in that particular package.
Sales of 1985 Mint Sets were 1,710,571. This was a relatively small decrease from 1984’s sales of 1,832,857 sets, but a significant decrease from 1981’s sales of 2,908,145 sets. However, the Susan B. Anthony Dollar was included in the 1981 Mint Sets. When the dollar was removed, both the face value and original issue price of the sets dropped. The Mint Set issue price was $7.00 in 1985.
The obverse and reverse of the Jefferson Nickel were both designed by German-born American sculptor Felix Schlag. The US Mint held an open competition in 1938 for the design of the new nickel, with the winner to receive $1,000. After reviewing 390 entries, the judges selected Schlag’s design.
The Jefferson Nickel obverse features a left profile depiction of President Thomas Jefferson, including his colonial-era pigtail. The profile occupies so much of the obverse that it leaves very little room for the various inscriptions.
The Jefferson Nickel reverse features a front view of Jefferson’s mansion, Monticello, near Charlottesville, Virginia. Jefferson’s passion for architecture led him to design, and redesign, the Monticello himself. It was built over a period of 40 years.
