Silver Eagle bullion coins are part of a four-coin collection available from the United States Mint. The American Eagle Series features coin designs in four different metals as of 2017, with the Silver Eagle and Gold Eagle the oldest coins, having been introduced in 1986. The Platinum Eagle debuted in 1997, and the Palladium Eagle debuted in 2017.
The Silver American Eagle coin is offered from the United States Mint in bullion, proof, and burnished versions. The bullion coin has been struck every year since 1986, with the proof coin for collectors struck every year since 1986 with the exception of 2009. The burnished coin debuted in 2006 on the 25th anniversary.
All 1986-2018 Silver American Eagles in this 33-coin set have a Mint State 69 grade from the NGC. Considered near-perfect specimens, these coins have full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Those flaws are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines found outside of the primary focal points of the design field.
On the obverse is the image of Walking Liberty. Considered one of the nation’s greatest circulation coin designs, it was created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman. Liberty walks toward the setting sun with the flag around her shoulders as a symbol of the nation’s drive toward a brighter future. This image appeared on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar from 1916 to 1947.
The reverse of all Silver Eagles includes the oldest coin design from the United States Mint. The heraldic eagle debuted in 1794 on a Philadelphia Mint coin, and has been updated numerous times in US history. This latest depiction was modernized by John Mercanti in 1986 for use on the Silver Eagle.
