The first three years the Gold Eagle 1 oz coin had far outpaced the three fractional weights. However, the 1989 1/10 oz coin had a mintage figure of 264,790 and would continue to close the gap on the 1 oz coin in the years to come. As for the price of gold per ounce in 1989, it spent the majority of the year below $400 per ounce, averaging $381.44 for the year.
On the obverse of the 1989 1 oz Gold American Eagle is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic image of Lady Liberty. She is depicted in his design with free-flowing hair and a brilliant robe covering her figure as she walks forth from the nation’s capital holding her torch aloft as a guiding light for the country.
The reverse of all Gold American Eagle coins features the design created solely for use on the Gold American Eagle series. Created by Miley Busiek, it depicts a female eagle confidently guarding the nest of hatchlings while a male flies overhead.
