Canada’s increasing need for coinage resulted in the UK’s Royal Mint opening a branch in Ottawa in 1908. When Canada became mostly independent from Britain in 1931, this branch was renamed the Royal Canadian Mint. As a result of the popularity of the Canadian gold coins, the RCM opened a second production facility in the 1980’s in Winnipeg to bolster their production capacity.
The Gold Canadian Maple Leaf coin was introduced in 1979 as a 99.9% fine gold coin. Four years later, the RCM made a significant change, increasing it to a 99.99% fine gold coin. The Gold Canadian Maple Leaf coin became the first bullion coin minted at such a high degree of gold purity. With the RCM’s reputation for the purity of their gold, the Gold Maple Leaf was now the standard for all 24-karat gold bullion coins.
The Gold Canadian Maple Leaf coin was initially produced in the 1 oz denomination only. Along with the increase to 99.99% fine gold, the RCM began producing them in additional weights. By 1990, the Gold Maple Leaf coins were produced in 4 weights – 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. Even with a couple of later weight additions, the 1 oz denomination has been the most famous and best-selling Gold Canadian Maple Leaf coin.
Gracing the obverse of the 1990 Gold Canadian Maple Leaf coin is the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II, depicting Her Majesty at 64 years of age. This is the first year that this 64-year-old portrayal of the Queen was displayed on the Gold Maple Leaf. It features a more mature-looking Queen Elizabeth II, with a necklace and earrings, and wearing the royal diadem. Since 1952, when she ascended to the throne, Her Majesty has been displayed on the obverse of all Canadian coinage. As time has passed, her profile has been updated several times to more accurately reflect her age.
The reverse of the 1990 Gold Canadian Maple Leaf coin continues to display the Maple Leaf, which was created by master engraver Walter Ott. He so clearly captured the magnificent texture and fine veins of the Maple Leaf that his design has remained virtually unchanged throughout time. Ott’s design has been used on all versions of the Canadian Maple Leaf coins.
