When the Royal Canadian Mint unveiled its Gold Maple Leaf coin in 1979, it launched the nation’s official bullion collection. Those original gold coins featured just .999 fine silver content, but were eventually upgraded to .9999 pure gold content by 1982. With the 1988 expansion of the series to include the Silver Maple Leaf, Canada tightened its grip as the leading mint to produce high-quality bullion coins.
The Silver Canadian Maple Leaf debuted in 1988 with .9999 fine silver content, making it the first-ever silver coin for sale with that level of purity. Today, the Silver Maple Leaf remains one of just a handful of annual-release bullion coins to feature such impressive purity.
Mintage figures for the 1991 issue of the Silver Canadian Maple Leaf were down for the second year in a row, and down substantially. The 1991 mintage of 644,300 coins was just one-fifth of the 1989 mintage and nearly one-third of the 1990 mintage. That downward trend would continue into 1992, with mintage dropping by 50% from 1991.
The obverse of Silver Canadian Maple Leaf coins features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s effigy appears on all Canadian coinage, and this particular design is just the second to appear on the Silver Maple Leaf. This 1990 design by Dora de Pedery-Hunt was the first by a Canadian artist and serves as the third-generation depiction of the Queen in right-profile relief.
On the reverse of the 1991 1 oz Silver Canadian Maple Leaf is the sugar maple leaf design. Originally created in 1979 by Walter Ott of the Royal Canadian Mint, this design appears on all versions of the coin and is unchanged since its debut.
