Proof Gold American Eagle coins were first introduced in 1986 with just a 1 oz weight available. The Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 authorized the US Mint to produce an official gold bullion coin for the nation. Originally, the program consisted of bullion and proof coins, with four weights in available in bullion.

In 1987, the proof program was expanded to include this ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagle coin. The program further expanded one year later in 1988 with the addition of the ¼ oz and 1/10 oz fractional-weight coins. All Gold American Eagle coins feature only gold sourced from within the US.

The obverse face of all coins features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ interpretation of Lady Liberty. In his design, she is featured in full-length figure with a torch held aloft in her right hand as she strides forward confidently out of the setting sun.

On the reverse is a design that is exclusive to the Gold American Eagle coin program. Created by Miley Busiek in 1986, the image depicts a male bald eagle as it flies over the family nest with an olive branch in its talons.

Each coin in this listing features a PF70 grade, indicating a perfectly struck proof coin with its full, original luster and no blemishes. Ultra-cameo coins include frosted designs overlaying clear background fields.
