For the first time in the history of the Proof Gold American Eagle program, all four of the Gold Eagles struck in 1994 were issued by the same mint. While the 1 oz gold coin had always been struck by the West Point Mint, the fractional weights had been handled by the Philadelphia Mint since the 1987 issue of 1/2 oz coins and the 1988 issue of the 1/4 and 1/10 oz coins. Each of these 1994 1/10 oz Proof Gold Eagles now features a “W” mint mark as a result.
All 1994 1/10 oz Proof Gold American Eagle Coins available here earned PF70 grades from the NGC. Coins certified PF70 are considered perfect specimens with full, original mint luster and a complete lack of detracting flaws in the design elements and surface areas. The included UCAM label stands for ultra-cameo. Coins with this type of finish have strong, frosted matte design elements overlaying a background field which is deeply-mirrored and clear.
On the obverse of 1994 1/10 oz Proof Gold American Eagle coins is the image of Liberty. Designed in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this bold new depiction of Liberty was groundbreaking in its day and set the course for a new era of American coin designs. It originally featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933.
The reverse side of the 1994 1/10 oz Proof Gold Eagle features a family of bald eagles. In this design from Miley Busiek, you’ll notice a group of hatchlings inside the nest which are closely guarded by a vigilant female. Flying overhead, there is a male eagle which carries an olive branch in its talons.
